BLKBOK, the piano virtuoso stemming from Detroit, brings his one-of-a-kind show to Spruce Peak Arts this Thursday, May 30th at 11AM and 7 PM.  Before he comes to Stowe, get to know the musician that the New York Times calls “Bach in his left hand, Debussy in his right.”

BLKBOK (pronounced “Black Bach”), born Charles Wilson, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He was immersed in a rich musical culture from a young age. He started playing the piano at the age of four; his formal music education began at the Detroit School of Arts, where he honed his skills in classical piano. His prodigious talent earned him scholarships and opportunities to study with renowned pianists and composers. His early career saw him performing in various classical venues, where his technical prowess and emotive playing quickly garnered attention.

BLKBOK was exposed to both “classical music and the vibrant sounds of Motown and hip-hop.” The intradisciplinary aspect of his musical education played a pivotal role in shaping his musical identity, and BLKBOK has stated that he “doesn’t really see genre” as a result his early experiences.

Although BLKBOK started his career within the classical sphere, he found mainstream success in the early 2010s by collaborating with artists such as Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and John Mayer, quickly cementing himself as one of the best, most unique session keyboardists in the music industry. In the early 2020s, BLKBOK found even more popularity on TikTok, covering pop songs with classical piano renditions. He released his first solo compositions in 2021, most notably his debut album “Black Book,” A critical masterpiece, The New York Times heralded “Black Book” as one of their “Top Five Classical Albums to Listen To Right Now.”

Beyond his musical achievements, BLKBOK is a passionate advocate for music education and social justice. He frequently engages in initiatives aimed at providing music education to underprivileged communities, believing in the transformative power of music. His commitment to these causes further amplifies his influence and legacy within the music industry and beyond.
